In 2004, Major Margaret Witt was discharged from the Air Force after it was discovered that she is gay. Witt sued, and this Friday US District Judge Ronald Leighton ruled in her favor. She is soon going back to service. This is the second time this month that a judge has ruled that the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy is unconstitutional. The journey to repeal the law continues to go slowly, but it certainly making progress. The idea is to make each case be fought out in court, thus creating a 'slow death' for the law, say gay rights activists. The judge said it best when he said: "The is no evidence that wounded troops care about the sexual orientation of the flight nurse or medical technician tending to their wounds."
In conclusion, this is another step forward for gay rights. The Don't Ask Don't Tell policy has a huge backing, and will not end quickly. For now, the best thing to do is fight each case individually. Eventually, nearly everyone affected by the law will win in court anyways and the law will just be causing the supporters legal trouble.
I think that the don't ask don't tell policy will soon be taken out, as well as the gay marriage issue here in the United States. Every time a vote like Prop 8 comes up, the vote gets closer and closer towards legaly allowing gay marriage. With many more votes happening around the country, the federal government has no choice but to take on the policies that they have been trying to put aside for awhile because of the prodigious disagreements within the country.
