There are currently about 26 million people in the US with diabetes, costing the government an estimated $194 per year in medical costs. But this problem is only going to get worse. A new report estimates that at this current rate, half of the US population will have it by 2020. This will cost a whopping $3.35 trillion. This should not be surprising, considering that diabetes is the fasting growing disease in America. This growth is due to many factors- firstly, the increase of obesity. Also, the growing population of seniors greatly shifts the numbers. And since there are now better treatments for diabetes, people are living longer. In order to combat this massive issue, health care officials are urging Americans to take better care of themselves. There is also an increased outcry to health care reform.
Conclusion: The amount of people in the US with diabetes is quickly becoming overwhelming. We need to change our health care to better suit this issue, and educate people to prevent the problem from growing.
I think an important reason for increasing number of diabetes is the obese problem. I agree that Americans should take better care of themselves because diabetes is not only a long-term treatment but also cost a lot of money. In order to reduce this rate, i think healthy diet style should be advertised more.
ReplyDeleteI agree that prevention of diabetes is much easier and more cost efficient than treatment of diabetes. Therefore Americans should be educated in the importance of a healthy diet and overall lifestyle. Maybe if Americans were more familiar with the causes of diabetes the number of diabetes cases would decrease.
ReplyDeletei believe many people bring this upon them selves in terms of obesity and and not taking care of them selves. the people who are obese because of the health habits are practically asking for diabetes and all sorts of health problems. this is an education problem because lost of the people are not educated well enough about there own health and the correct was to stay healthy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with paul. This issue is almost entirely preventable. It just goes to show the lack of discipline in our country. I understand certain cases are exempt from that statement. However, there is no excuse for the rest. We need to realize that our health affects more than just ourselves. We need to be less selfish and just go for a run.
