President Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva in Brazil is trying to reduce greenhouse gas emission by combatting deforestation of the Amazon. He is committed to reducing it to 39 percent by 2020. It has been gradually reduced since 2000. Now, deforestation of the Amazon is dropped to 2500 miles a year which was half of what it was two years ago and third of what it was in 2000. Deforestation must be dropped for its negative impact on the environment. One reason is that it emits huge amount of carbon dioxide called black carbon when forests are burned. Another reason tropical forests are necessary is because they are one of the world’s greatest carbon sinks. Although, deforestation is taken place to make way for large scale-farming and ranching and harvesting wood, but also trees have been cut down in parts of Asia to be able to grow biofuel trees, such as palm trees, that are less harmful to the environment than the fossil fuels. The president plans to achieve this goal by using a satellite that detects illegal cutting, deep in the jungle. He also set up pioneered programs which is a system where landowners can be paid for keeping their trees standing, so they can at least reduce financial incentive for illegal logging.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Brazil is making progress with their commitment to reduce deforestation in the Amazon. They recognized the problems their country faces so environmentally harmful acts will cease. Although no major leaders are attending the climate conference in Cancún, Mexico this week, the environmental problem is an important issue that the world needs to act on.

  1. I am glad to see the people of power around the world are stepping up to fight a global cause. By combating the deforestation of the Amazon, many advantages come about including decreased carbon dioxide emissions and another is just the fact that thousands of animals live in the jungle and did nothing to deserve this. I am intrigued by the satellite that the president plans on using to watch for illegal deforestation.

  2. Brazil have took a great leap toward fighting the global warming. The Amazon Rainforest is known to produce 1/3 of the oxygen in the world, and I am happy that the President of Brazil took strong action to protect the forest.

  3. Deforestation is a major cause of environmental issues. It is nice to see that others in this world also care about the environment that we all share. It seems as though the President of Brazil is a strong environmental advocate because he is willing to reward landowners for not cutting down their trees. Commonly, we see environmental problems worsen because people are too lazy to care and make a change. I am glad that Brazil is taking action and actually reducing their deforestation.

  4. Not only is Brazil participating in the world-wide initiative to stop global warming, they are also stopping of one of the greatest deforestation in the entire planet. Brazil has been cutting down the Amazon for years and it's great to hear that that biologically unique gem, and those indigenous people who inhabit it, are once again safe.

  5. I think its a move in the right direction but I don't think its a huge deal seeing as brazil contains a small percentage of the forests in the world and that the biggest carbon sink is the ocean it really comes down to our ability to reduce emissions then to increase the size of forests.

  6. I would like to point out that Brazil's rain forests are some of the most extensive and ecologically diverse in the world. This initiative has the potential not only to decrease carbon dioxide emissions, but also to help protect many plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. Also, I consider this a great example of how new technologies (such as satellites) are helping to protect our planet. While reducing emissions is an important goal to work toward, the huge mass of plant life in the rain forests is crucial to lessening the impact our current emissions have on the environment.

  7. I think it's really good that the president of Brazil is taking action to try and stop the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. It has been a growing problem over the years because people have been destroying it without thinking about the long term environmental consequences. Not only will does it ruin ecosystems and cause animals to lose their habitats and die, but it also causes major problems for us because of the emissions. Even though there are no major leaders attending the climate conference, Brazil has made a good start and hopefully others will follow their example and help to reduce this problem as quickly as possible

  8. It's good to see progress in minimizing human impact on the environment. Although it hardly effects us in our lifetime and it is easy to be selfish, the planet is a major resource that cannot be recovered by future generations. There is no earthly reason (haha) to blatently destroy the environment through things such as deforestation. Go Brazil!
